A new diptera family member for the patch

15th January 2017

Last Sunday (8th) an unfamiliar fly entered the reserve visitor centre at NWT Holme Dunes, and today after mounting the specimen, and a few tweets of images sent out by Robert Smith the family was revealed to us by Ian Andrews (thanks Ian). Later I spent sometime trying to get to grips with my first diptera key! Anyway to cut a long story short Robert called me later to inform me it had already been identified on line thus putting me out of my misery. It turns out to be Suillia variegata and hopefully a new record for the site and area, for us at least.

Early natterjack!

9th January 2017

On arrival back to The Firs in cold conditions (4 degrees) I saw what I thought was a toad in the headlights, sitting still on the track. I thought I better check, and was shocked to find a very cold natterjack toad! We had some winter sightings last year but in very mild conditions (9 degrees or above).
