A Sun-star

Its not often I find this species washed up on the shore but I found two on Monday at Holme and one today, Tuesday, at Old Hunstanton. The Dogwhelk eggs caught my eye too and amongst the many dead flatfish on the shore were one or two Plaice, which we failed to record last year for some reason.

Pretty Polly !

The Hunstanton and Holme shore today was littered with razor shells, dead crabs and vast amounts of hornwrack following the strong onshore winds of the weekend. Unsuprisingly, it was frequented by a large number of gulls, including an adult Mediterranean Gull wearing a lime green darvic. Amongst the flotsam and jetsam were hundreds of conical sand tubes, made by the Polychaete Pectinaria koreni.

Saturday's haul - well some of it !

A dawn 'til dusk day, starting with a White Satin in my garden moth trap and ending with an adult Long-tailed Skua in the harbour. In between was a sizeable haul of new species as Steve Lane, Steve Falk, Robert and I searched the dunes and Ragged Marsh for invertebrates. Other birds included seven Arctic Skuas high above the harbour, 2 Greenshank and 2 Whimbrel west and 2 Yellow Wagtails east.  Robert found us a smart Clouded Yellow in the dunes, a Dark Green Fritillary zipped past and our first Grayling of the year was at Gore Point.
