A late start this morning following heavy overnight and early morning rain. It was already warm by 10:00 and an there were many butterflies on the wing, including the first Essex Skipper and the first of the new broods of Small Copper and Peacock. Several Emerald Damselflies on Redwell Marsh were the first Ive seen here and there was sizeable emergence of Turnip Sawflies too. Plants new in flower included Teasel and Chickory, with Strawberry Clover attaining the late-flowering/fruiting stage when they become easier to spot amongst the other clovers. There are some fine stands of Annual Beard Grass on the seaward banks of the newly-heightened Thornham sea bank at its northern end - a nationally scarce plants and within sight of the stands of the stately Marsh Sow-thistle, which Phil and I found new to the area three years ago.
