Two huge Fungi

Oak Bracket, Inonotus dryadeus,  August,  Ringstead Downs - huge bracket, weeping below

  1. I'm loathe to say it, but your second bracket definitely isn't a Ganoderma. Based on the weeping and felty look to the top I'd say it's probably Oak Bracket, Inonotus dryadeus, which sometimes grows like this, and sometimes just like a sort of weeping mass.

  2. Thanks James - Ive now seen it twice at Ringstead Downs - both times in the same vivid colour, at the base of trees and in late summer - the mass quickly vanishing. Does that fit too ? I remain very puzzled by brackets !
